Opportunities galore in the green sector: Millions of new jobs

Written by: Saad Khan

Combating climate change has never been an easy task. Also it was never considered as a profession and volunteers were often looked down upon by the corporate folks. They were partially right in their approach as climate change had very little employment opportunities to offer with very low success rates.

Fortunately that’s not the case anymore. Recently ILO, UNEP, the International Trade Union Confederation and the International Organization of Employers joined hands to examine the job opportunities in the climate change sector. They have come up with a detailed report titled Green Jobs: Towards Decent Work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World which can prove to be a landmark for a green road map for jobs creation.

The tireless efforts of green evangelists are finally bearing fruit as the report suggests that millions of new job opportunities have been created in the climate change, green energy and sustainable development sectors. The investment in the field of green has also seen a monstrous growth in recent years.

The report elaborates the current job trends in the green sector,

Globally, some 300,000 workers are employed in wind power and perhaps 170,000 in solar photovoltaics (PV). More than 600,000 people are employed in the solar thermal sector—by far most of them in China. Almost 1.2 million workers are estimated to be employed in generating biomass-derived energy (mostly biofuels) in just four leading countries: Brazil, the United States, Germany, and China. Overall, the number of people presently employed in the renewable energy sector runs to about 2.3 million.

The future possibilities are endless as more than 2.1 million new jobs in wind energy and up to 6.3 million jobs in the Solar PVs are expected by 2030. Biofuel sector is not lagging behind as as high as 12 million new job opportunities will be available in this sector.

Pakistan still remains aloof:

As we have discussed before, Pakistan has yet to tap the huge potential of renewable energy and there are no ongoing efforts to avert the climatic disaster. We can surely get a big piece of the cake but only if If we start our work from today.
